THINGS WE LEARNED

#SAVITA Calls were made this morning for Taoiseach Enda Kenny to personally meet with the husband of the late Savita Halappanavar.  Meanwhile, the HSE formally asked the country’s health watchdog, HIQA, to carry out a statutory inquiry into the death of Savita, and HIQA said its board is meeting to discuss the request.

#FIANNA FÁIL Fianna Fail released their alternative budget today, which has a near 50:50 split between tax increases and expenditure cuts and outlines projected savings of €3.5 billion. Finance spokesperson Michael McGrath said that they were proposing that education, mental health and disability services be fully protected.

#KILFINANE Parents have been blockading a Limerick school today as a dispute over payment saw some subcontractors attempt to remove fittings they installed in the new national school in Kilfinane earlier this year. Recent reports say that a High Court injunction was served on the sub contractors by the school’s board of management.

#RTÉ The BAI requested that RTÉ publish the document on which its report into last October’s Frontline Presidential Debate was based. RTÉ said it would post it, and reiterated its apology to Seán Gallagher, and said that it welcomes the decision that a statutory investigation into the show is not warranted.

#ABORTION The number behind the abortion ‘robo-calls’ was shut down by the Data Protection Commissioner today – but some readers are reporting that they have since received such calls. Two investigations into the calls have begun after more than 30 complaints were received by the DPC about them.

#CRIME Two men were arrested today over an armed robbery at Clonalvy Post Office in Meath yesterday, during which staff were threatened with a knife. Also yesterday, a woman was threatened and tied up in her home by two men, who made off with cash. Today, a cash-in-transit van was robbed at DCU, close to the student centre. Gardaí are investigating.
