THINGS WE LEARNED

#ASSAULT: A male garda has been injured in an alleged assault at a house in Tallaght, Co Dublin in the early hours of this morning. Six people were arrested and have subsequently been released. Gardaí said that the garda received ‘a serious facial injury’ but has been released from hospital.

#PENALTY POINTS: Independent TD Luke ‘Ming’ Flanagan has said he will address a report that claims he has penalty points wiped from his record by gardaí during his speaking time in the Dáil on Tuesday evening. Today Flanagan tweeted that gardaí asked him if he would like the points removed from his licence.

#PROPERTY TAX: Revenue today launched a new website showing property values around the country, which will be used to calculate how much property tax homeowners will have to pay. The property valuation guide gives an estimated price for properties in a given location, rather than specific valuations for individual properties.

#INVESTIGATION: Gardaí are treating the death of a man in Kilkenny, whose body was discovered on Thursday, as suspicious. The post-mortem has been carried out but gardaí said they are not releasing any information about the cause of death for “operational reasons”.

#SOCIAL MEDIA: Communications Minister Pat Rabbitte has said that sites such as Twitter and Facebook are important for reporting on action and inaction and ensuring that those in authority are held accountable. Speaking at a conference, Rabbitte stressed that the government’s system for evaluating media mergers and acquisitions “is long due an overhaul”.
