IRISH

• Shell has lost a licence to operate a gas terminal at Bellnaboy in Co Mayo.
• Newly-released John Gilligan swears he had nothing to do with Veronica Guerin’s murder.
• The Simon Community charity had its only van stolen by what we must assume was a pack of lousers.
• A Garda detective who appeared as an actor in Love/Hate is facing an inquiry.
• Half of the Cabinet got stuck in a lift in Government buildings (before the Budget so it makes it in here).
• A single-car crash in the early hours of the morning in Meath killed a young man - and injured five others.
• A man in his 60s was hospitalised in an aggravated burglary in Dublin – three have been arrested.
• Former junior minister Ivor Callely will be tried on mobile phone expense claims in March next year. [RTÉ]
• Gardai raised €5 million by policing special events and festivals since 2012.

INTERNATIONAL

#PHILIPPINES: The above image from PA Images in Cebu shows the impact of a 7.2 magnitude earthquake in central Philippines today. The death toll is now over 90.

#SYRIA: Starving men, women and children in Syria have been given permission by clerics to eat normally forbidden meats- such as cats, dogs and donkeys that have been killed in fighting.

#USA: Fiscal talks are in limbo, laments the New York Times, as the government shutdown there continues.

#PALESTINE: Swiss scientists found traces of radioactive polonium-210 on Yasser Arafat’s private belongings, adding to claims that he was poisoned, The Guardian reports.
