Flooding in parts of Cork and Kerry after counties emerge from rain warnings

The road from Mogeely to Killeagh is closed due to flooding after the river adjacent to the road to the east of Mogeely Village burst its banks.

THERE’S FLOODING IN parts of Cork and Kerry after both counties were under Status Yellow weather warnings for rain earlier.

The Status Yellow alert came into force at midnight across Cork and Kerry and remained in place until 2pm this afternoon.

A separate Status Yellow alert came into place at 2am overnight for counties Carlow, Kilkenny, Tipperary, Waterford, Wexford and Wicklow and was in place until 5pm this evening. 

Met Éireann had forecast spells of heavy rain which could lead to localised flooding, difficult travelling conditions and poor visibility.

In Co Cork, there were a number of road closures as a result of heavy rain and flooding. 

As of 4.30pm, the road from Mogeely to Killeagh is closed due to flooding after the river adjacent to the road just to the east of Mogeely Village burst its banks – the affected townland is ‘Carrignashinny’. 

Traffic travelling from Cork via the Two Mile Inn will be diverted in Mogeely Village south on the L-3805-44 to Castlemartyr.

The Park Road Mallow (N72-2) is also closed, with diversions in place, as is the R588 south of Enniskeane Village. 

The local road L2014 is also closed and there are reports of significant surface water in Castlemartyr Village.

Elsewhere, the L-5619-34 AghaCross to Marhalstown, in the Feermoy MD, is also closed.

The road is also impassable at Clyde Bridge, Mallow and there is also flooding at the Permanent TSB premises in Mallow.

The Road to Áras Na Locha Housing Estate, Dunmanway, is also flooded, with Council Crew onsite, while the road is impassable after Balinaltig Cemetery, before Gearagh Cross, on Watergrass Hill Side.

And as of midday, Kerry County Council advised of flooding on the R551 at Blackpool near Causeway and asked motorists to avoid the area if possible and take alternative routes.

Meanwhile, a Status Yellow rainfall warning remains in place in the North until 9pm tonight.
