Four men charged following garda investigation into dissidents

The men appeared in court today and were charged with firearm and explosive offences.

FOUR MEN HAVE been charged with a number of offences following the discovery of firearms and explosives during garda raids earlier this week.

Gardaí investigating dissident activity discovered a large amount of ammunition, a firearm and suspected explosive material during 15 separate raids in Counties Wexford, Waterford, Clare and Longford on Thursday morning. Nine men were arrested during the operation and four were later released without charge.

RTÉ reports today that Joseph O’Brien, 27, of 41 Cherry Orchard Heights, Enniscorthy, Co Wexford has been charged with the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.

Joseph Mooney, 45, of Kilmeaden, Co Waterford and Desmond Brennan, 64, of Clonroad in Ennis, Co Clare have been charged with possession of explosive materials. Twenty-nine-year-old David Rockett, of Kilmacthomas, Co Waterford, was charged with the possession of improvised explosive devices.

Gardaí say their investigation into suspected dissident Republican activity is continuing.
