Hurling for Cancer Research

Meet your GAA heroes in person while raising funds for cancer research

Hurling for Cancer Research takes place on 24 August and tickets are on sale now.

FOURTEEN YEARS AFTER a challenge between legendary trainer Jim Bolger and retired jockey Davy Russell sparked an idea, Hurling for Cancer Research has become one of Ireland’s unique sporting charity events, bringing together GAA stars, sporting icons and supporters to raise vital funds for cancer research.

Now they’re gearing up for the 2026 Hurling for Cancer Research charity hurling match in Carlow on 24 August, a one-of-a-kind sporting event where fans can meet their heroes, enjoy a unique family day out and support vital cancer research.

Having already raised €1.9 million for the Irish Cancer Society, organisers are hoping that this year’s event, supported by Centra, will push fundraising beyond the €2 million mark. Every ticket sold and donation made helps support vital cancer research that has the potential to change lives.

This is the second year that Centra is the official partner of Hurling for Cancer Research. As a supporter of both Irish sport and local communities, Centra is helping expand the reach of the event through nationwide promotion, in-store activity and fundraising initiatives.

Since its inception in 2012, Hurling for Cancer has become one of Ireland’s most unique sporting occasions, attracting some of the biggest names in Irish sport. Hurling legends Patrick Horgan, Noel McGrath, TJ Reid and Lee Chin have lined out alongside camogie stars such as Aisling Thompson and Ursula Jacob. The event has also welcomed Gaelic footballers Paudie Clifford and Con O’Callaghan, former Republic of Ireland internationals Shane Long and Stephen Hunt, and horse racing stars including Rachel Blackmore, alongside founders Jim Bolger and Davy Russell. Legendary managers Brian Cody and John Kiely have also lent their support from the sidelines, highlighting the unique cross-sport appeal of the event.

More than just a match, it offers supporters a rare opportunity to get up close to their sporting heroes, collect autographs and enjoy an atmosphere unlike any other event on the Irish sporting calendar.

Whether it’s meeting your heroes, grabbing a photo, collecting a prized autograph or simply soaking up the atmosphere, Hurling for Cancer Research is an event not to be missed. So bring your hurley, don’t forget your pen and get ready for a memorable evening of sport, community and fundraising.

If you can’t make it to Carlow, you can tune in live on TG4 from 7.15pm or support the fundraiser by donating through the Hurling for Cancer Research campaign.

Family day out

The event is a brilliant day out for families, especially in the weeks ahead of going back to school. Kids aged seven and upwards will really enjoy the chance to get to meet some of their hurling and sporting heroes.
