Woman dies after being struck by a van in Mayo

The 39-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene this morning.

A WOMAN WAS struck by a van and killed while walking on a minor road in Mayo this morning.

The 39-year-old was fatally injured in the accident that occurred at Bunnahowen in Glencastle at about 6.55am. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Her body was removed to Mayo General Hospital for a post-mortem exam. Forensic investigators are still examining the scene and the road is closed to traffic. Local diversions are in place.

There have been eight pedestrians killed on Irish roads so far this year. Altogether, 40 people have died in road collisions. The figure was far greater than the 25 deaths recorded in the same period in 2012.
