Homeless man hospitalised after youths set him on fire

The 38-year-old homeless Belarussian man is in a “very serious condition” after being attacked in St Petersburg.

A GROUP OF YOUTHS set a homeless man ablaze in the centre of Saint Petersburg, leaving him with serious burns on his back and hands, a police official said today.

The 38-year-old from Belarus was in hospital in a “very serious condition” after the unidentified youths burned him on Saturday in the well-known Sennaya Square, in the centre of Russia’s former imperial capital.

“According to initial information, he was able to say that he’d been burned … before losing consciousness,” the police official told AFP.

Russia’s interior ministry says the homeless population is between 150,000 and 350,000 but experts put the real number far higher.

They claim between 1.5 million and 4.2 million of Russia’s 143 million residents are homeless.
