Sinn Féin most popular party in Ireland as support for Government slumps, says new poll
New polling from the Sunday Independent and Ireland Thinks shows an increase in support for parties on the left after Catherine Connolly’s presidential win.
SINN FÉIN IS now the most popular party in the country, according to new polling from the Sunday Independent and Ireland Thinks.
The sample size was 1,609 and the poll was conducted yesterday. It determined that support for Sinn Féin has risen two points to 23% since Catherine Connolly’s win in the presidential election.
Fine Gael is the second most popular party on 19%, a drop of two points, while Fianna Fáil has also suffered a two point drop to stand at 18%.
Left parties saw an increase across the board, bar People Before Profit-Solidarity, which remained unchanged on 3%.
The Social Democrats’ support went up one point to 9%; Labour went up one point to 5%; and the Greens went up one point to 2%. Independent Ireland’s support went up one point to 5%.
Aontú’s support remained unchanged on 6%. Independents’ collective support dropped one point to 10%.
All parties in government – Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael, and Independents as a collective – suffered a drop. Polling follows the presidential election and a budget announcement that offered little in the way of new supports.
Separately, on the most pressing issues facing Irish people, housing came in on top at 50%, followed by cost of living on 41%. Immigration jumped 11 points to 31%.
The margin of error is +/- 2.5%.
