A MARSHAL TAKING PART in the Cycle Against Suicide died in a road accident at Loughmor in Co Donegal this morning.

The 69-year-old man was helping to marshal the event on a motorcycle when it collided with a truck on the Donegal Town to Ballbofey road.

The charity cycle this year involves a total of  7,500 people who are cycling 1,400 kilometres around Ireland, visiting 123 towns to raise awareness of mental illness and suicide.

The fatal crash happened at about 11.50 am this morning on the Donegal Town to Strabane route of the cycle, about 45 minutes after the cyclists left Donegal.

No cyclists were involved in the accident and the driver of the truck was uninjured.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene before his body was removed to Letterkenny General Hospital.

No decision has yet been made with regards to the remaining four days of the cycle according to organiser Jim Breen.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with our dear friend and his family at this incredibly difficult time. Our hearts are simply broken,” he said this evening.
