Man arrested in Derry in connection with "illegal activity" in Syria

Reports say the man had recently returned from the war-torn country.

A MAN HAS been arrested in Derry in connection with “illegal activity” in Syria.

The PSNI said that the man, in his 20s, was arrested in the Melmore Gardens estate in the Creggan area of the city yesterday, but did not elaborate on the nature of the “illegal activity”.

A PSNI statement says:

“Detectives from Serious Crime Branch have arrested a 25 year old man in Derry as part of inquiries into reports of alleged activity in Syria earlier this year.

“The suspect was arrested in the Creggan area of the city and has been taken to Antrim police station for questioning.”

RTÉ reports that the man’s family had expressed fears that he had gone to Syria to fight in the civil war, having said he was going to Turkey on holiday.
