A MAN IN his 30s has died following a two-vehicle collision on the A5 in Co Tyrone.

The collision between a white Audi A6 and silver Nissan Micra happened last night at around 10.15pm on the Omagh Road, A5, in the Garvaghy area.

The driver of the Nissan Micra, a 36-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Medical treatment was provided to the three occupants of the Audi A6, who were then taken to hospital for treatment to injuries not believed to be life-threatening.

The Omagh Road, between Ballygawley and Omagh, was closed in both directions as the PSNI conducted a forensic examination overnight and into this morning.

It fully reopened this afternoon.

The PSNI has appealed to anyone who witnessed the collision, or who may have footage which could assist with the investigation, to make contact.

The A5 has now seen 58 deaths since 2006, when upgrades to the dual carriageway were approved by Stormont.

However, the High Court in Belfast last year quashed the project and ruled that the proposed scheme breached elements of Northern Ireland’s Climate Change Act.

SDLP MLA for west Tyrone, Daniel McCrossan, offered his condolences and described the death as a “tragic loss”.

“No words can ease the pain at a time like this, and my thoughts are firmly with them as they come to terms with this devastating news,” said McCrossan.

He also thanked emergency services who attended the scene and added that their “professionalism and dedication is greatly appreciated”.

Meanwhile, McCrossan remarked that the A5 “has seen far too many tragedies over the years”.

“Yet again, a family is left grieving and a community is left in shock.

“Every life lost on this road is a stark reminder of the urgent need to improve safety and deliver the long promised A5 upgrade.”
