MERCEDES-BENZ has launched the new X-Class model – its first ever pickup truck.
The Mercedes-Benz X-Class uses the same chassis as the Nissan Navara pickup and the same 2.3-litre engine (although Mercedes will eventually introduce its own 3.0-litre V6 diesel). The X-Class is also 70mm wider and 20mm lower than the Navara.
The X-Class comes in three model variants: Pure, Progressive, and Power.
Across all three design and equipment lines, owners can choose from nine exterior colours and 17, 18 or 19-inch wheel rims. There are three choices of cockpit trim, in a choice of five seat covers that includes two leather options with contrasting topstitching, and a choice of two roof lining colours.
Progressive and Power models get a centre console prominently framed by a decorative trim in silver shadow. The instrument cluster is from Merc’s C-Class and V-Class range and consists of large, analogue round dials with a 7-inch colour multimedia display positioned between the dials. Additionally, Power models get electrically adjustable seats and electric two-way lumbar support, as standard.
The X-Class can haul a payload of over 1 tonne and the braked towing capacity is 1,650 – 3,500kg (depending on engine and equipment). It is equipped with lighting in the cargo area as standard and the load bed is designed wide enough to fit a Euro-pallet between the wheel arches.
Powering the X-Class is a 2.3-litre common-rail diesel engine with a choice of two power outputs – 163hp in the single turbocharged X220d, and 190hp in the biturbo X250d. A six-speed manual transmission is standard on the X220d Pure and X220d 4MATIC Pure and Progressive models. The X250d 4MATIC comes in Progressive and Power trims and gets a seven-speed automatic transmission.
The entry-level X220 Pure rear-wheel drive model is priced at €39,950, inclusive of VAT & VRT. Progressive models start from €43,995 with Power models costing from €52,550.
It is being sold through seven main dealers: Sligo-based Connolly Motor Group; Cork Truck Services; Gilmores of Kingscourt; Kinahan Commercials, Moate and three Dublin city outlets: MSL Grange at Pottery Road, Deansgrange; MSL Park Motors on North Circular Road and MUTEC on Long Mile Road.
