A REGISTERED NURSE has been charged with murder following the fatal shooting of a woman outside a hospital in Houston, Texas yesterday.

The woman’s newborn son was taken from her after she was fatally wounded. Witnesses said she called out “my baby” as the attacker fled the scene by car.

Montgomery County District Attorney Brett Ligon later tweeted: “Infant found safe. Person of interest is detained.”

Speaking to ABC earlier today, Ligon said that Verna McClain was charged this morning with the capital murder of Kala Marie Golden, 28, though he did not clarify if she was the person detained last night.

He said that McClain’s statements to investigators suggest that she had planned to kidnap a child, but that Golden happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

“There were statements as indicated in the arrest record that were made by Ms. McClain that led us to believe that, in fact, this was an intentional act on her part,” Ligon said. “Not that Ms. Golden was targeted specifically, but that this was part of a plan to kidnap a child.”

Witnesses at the scene said the two women appeared to argue before shots were fired. Some witnesses also claimed to have seen a man in the car that sped from the scene with the infant.
