Credit where its Dew: Historic Edwardian home hits the market in Tullamore

Kingston House was originally built for the creators of one of Offaly’s best-known brands.

WHISKEY CONNOISSEURS MAY already know the origin of the name Tullamore Dew, but for everyone else, let’s start with a short history lesson. The famous whiskey takes its name from the initials of Daniel E. Williams, who started working for the company at the age of 15, worked his way up to general manager and later owned the original distillery.

It was Williams and his descendants that made Tullamore Dew the renowned whiskey brand it is today.

Now on the market for €750,000, Williams’ home, formerly Auburn House, was built in 1909. His grandson, Edmund Williams (1928-2007) was the last member of the family to live in this huge house.

Today, Kingston House spans a whopping 506 m² following the addition of a two-bay, three-storey extension, a conservatory and a further extension to the back of the home, by the present owners.

With such a large floor area, it will come as no surprise that there are ample rooms to relax and entertain in. The sitting room with its high ceilings and decorative coving is filled with natural light thanks to a double aspect.

The bright and unique kitchen is also double aspect with plenty of storage, all appliances integrated, granite worktops and a Belfast sink. From here, double glass doors lead to a raised sun deck outside, ideal for entertaining al fresco.

With garden views, it connects to the conservatory that leads out to the lawned areas surrounding the house. The floor is laid in Liscannor stone and there is built-in seating in the space allowing you to relax in nature, no matter the weather.

Then there is a formal drawing room with a bay ceiling-height window, feature fireplace and period wallpaper along with built-in bookshelves.

There is also a living room with a dining space where the high ceilings and decorative coving is continued. An elegant fireplace and solid timber herringbone floor along with ornate radiators and access to the garden all add to the luxury.

The house features one of the fanciest play rooms around with its high ceiling and herringbone flooring. This space leads to the utility room, so it’s a great space for the kids to hang while you get on with housework.

On to the bedrooms, the main one has a gorgeous bay window, a fireplace and its own dressing room as well as bathroom.

A whopping seven bedrooms remain, one more of which has it’s own bathroom and all have great views of the surrounding garden.

The dressing room linked to the main bedroom is dual aspect, so it’s full of natural light. L-shaped, it has louvre doors and a floor-to-ceiling wardrobe running the full length of two walls, a dressing table area and a door that leads to a balcony.

You could be forgiven for thinking that Kingston House is in the depths of the countryside, but Tullamore town is just a five minute walk away, close to the distillery, which surely came in handy for Daniel E. Williams

The town is also a manageable commute from Dublin city if the capital ever calls, taking about 90 minutes’ drive. The train is even quicker however, and no doubt there’ll be plenty of space to leave the car at home.

Perhaps one of the biggest advantages when it comes to Kingston House is that for a period property is in a great condition. Many of the windows are triple glazed, the floors are covered in quality timber and tiles, and the bathrooms are in good shape. All the while, the owners remained sympathetic to the home’s Edwardian roots and undeniable rich history.

Kingston House, Clonminch Road, Tullamore, Co Offaly is on the market for €750,000 through DNG Kelly Duncan.
