Prosecutors may focus on Colin Howell's second wife following Hazel Stewart conviction

Questions remain following the conviction of Hazel Stewart for the murder of her husband and her former lover’s wife yesterday.

THE ESTRANGED SECOND wife of double murderer Colin Howell may be questioned again following the conviction of Howell’s former lover Hazel Stewart yesterday for the same crimes.

Kyle Jorgenson was allegedly told by her husband Howell in 1998 that he and Stewart had carried out the murders of Trevor Buchanan, Stewart’s husband and Lesley Howell, Colin’s first wife, in May 1991, according to the Irish Times.

The 15-day trial of Stewart, which ended yesterday with her conviction, heard that in 1998 Howell confessed the crimes to his second wife who now lives in Florida with the couple’s five children. She is seeking a divorce.

Detective Superintendent Raymond Murray, the Police Service of Norther Ireland’s (PSNI) chief investigating officer, said there was a file “regarding Kyle Howell with the Public Prosecution Service”.

The Belfast Telegraph has confirmed that the Police Ombudsman in Northern Ireland will investigate the original handling of the case by the then Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC) following a complaint by the family.

Detectives originally believed that the murdered Howell and Buchanan had committed suicide after they were found dead together in a fume filled car in 1991.

It was only when dentist Colin Howell confessed in January 2009 and was subsequently sentenced to 21 years in prison did the focus then also turn on his former lover Stewart who was also convicted of the murders yesterday.
