Rain warning issued for Cork again as county recovers from local flooding

Met Éireann says more heavy rain could cause further surface flooding today after roads were closed in parts of Cork and Kerry yesterday.

A STATUS YELLOW rain warning has been issued for Cork as the county continues to recover from flooding and road closures following heavy downpours yesterday.

Met Éireann says further spells of heavy rain on already saturated ground could lead to excess surface water and spot flooding.

The alert is is effect from 11am to 11pm today.

Yesterday, parts of Cork and Kerry saw significant flooding after prolonged rainfall led to difficult driving conditions and several road closures.

In Cork, the road from Mogeely to Killeagh remained closed yesterday evening after a nearby river burst its banks near Carrignashinny, just east of Mogeely Village.

The Park Road in Mallow (N72-2) and the R588 south of Enniskeane Village were also closed, with surface flooding reported in Castlemartyr.

In Mallow, flooding was reported at the Permanent TSB premises, while Clyde Bridge was impassable.

Council crews were deployed across the county, including Dunmanway and Watergrasshill, where several local roads were flooded.

In neighbouring Kerry, flooding was reported on the R551 at Blackpool near Causeway, and motorists were advised to avoid the area.

Elsewhere today, mist and fog will be slow to clear this morning before cloud and rain move in from the south, bringing heavy falls at times and spreading northwards through the day.

The north of the country will stay mostly dry until evening, with highs of 9 to 13 degrees in light to moderate east to northeast winds.

Tonight will remain cloudy and wet, though it will become drier further south later, with just isolated showers.

Temperature lows of 5 to 10 degrees are expected.
