IS TRAIDISIÚN LÁIDIR é bainte feamainne sna ceantair Ghaeltachta agus sna ceantair oileáin in Éirinn ar feadh na céadta bliain.

De réir meastacháin, bíonn thart ar 25,000 go 40,000 tona den fheamainn bainte amach gach bliain agus tagann formhór na feamainne ó fhoinsí fiáine in Éirinn.

Tá an-tóir ar an bhfeamainn sa lá atá inniu ann ó thaobh táirgí bídh agus sláinte de chomh maith.

Chuaigh muid go hOileánra Seaweed Baths i Leiter Mealláin, áit gur labhair muid le Noel Lee, bainisteoir an chomhlachta faoi stair na feamainne in Éirinn agus an úsáid nua-aimseartha atá ann don fheamainn na laethanta seo.

SEAWEED HARVESTING IS a centuries-long tradition in Ireland’s Gaeltacht and island areas.

It is estimated that between 25,000 and 40,000 tonnes of seaweed are harvested annually, with the majority coming from wild sources in Ireland.

Seaweed is also highly sought after nowadays for use in food and health products.

We visited Oileánra Seaweed Baths in Lettermullen, where we spoke to the company’s manager, Noel Lee, about the history of seaweed, what seaweed harvesting entails and its modern-day uses in Ireland.
