SHANNEN DOHERTY WAS honoured over the weekend for her efforts to raise awareness about cancer and the importance of early detection.
The actor (45) received a Courage Award at the American Cancer Society’s inaugural Giants of Science Gala in LA on Saturday.
Her friend and fellow actor Sarah Michelle Gellar presented her with the award.
Doherty was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015. Earlier this year, she confirmed the disease had spread to her lymph nodes.
The former Charmed and Beverly Hills 90210 actor told ET Online: “I don’t view it as me accepting the Courage Award for myself. I’m accepting the Courage Award on behalf of every single cancer patient out there because it takes a lot of courage.”
For the last year-and-a-half, cancer has been my teacher. It’s taught me what love, strength, friendship and support truly looks like.
“It’s opened my eyes to myself and it’s allowed me to not only share my journey with people but it’s actually allowed me to share my inner self with anybody who actually wanted to know what it was like … And the end result is that I am nothing but vulnerability and, to me, vulnerability is courage.”
Doherty also expressed her support for Michael Bublé, who recently announced that his three-year-old son has cancer. Doherty said such a diagnosis must be devastating for any parent.
