5 skincare myths debunked and crucial information you need to know from our resident expert

Do you know the difference between dry and dehydrated skin? Is it the same thing? We’re looking at popular skincare myths.

ARE YOU EMBARKING on a skincare journey, but don’t know where to start? With the amount of information readily available, it’s easy to be tripped up by the myths and false information that surrounds the industry.

We’re on a myth  busting mission with Clarins, so if you’ve ever wondered about how to get the hydrated skin of your dreams or whether there’s any truth in anti-aging prevention when it comes to your skin, keep reading as we debunk and learn crucial skin information from Bronwyn Conway, National Training Manager with Clarins Ireland.

Is it true that you can’t help your skin if it’s dry, no matter what products you use?

If your skin is dry, in order to avoid that tight, irritated feeling it is essential to moisturise it correctly using oils and oil based emulsions to give a feeling of comfort and a smooth skin texture. Hydra-Essentiel Rich Cream contains multi level molecular hyaluronic acid to hydrate the skin but also has shea butter which is intensely nourishing and comforting on the skin.

You can use the same products day and night, there’s no real difference!

No, this is definitely a myth. During the day your skin is in defence mode and it needs products to protect it from external aggressors. At night, your skin is in repair mode and it needs a product to replenish it. We lose water through our epidermis when we sleep at night and it’s important that our night cream contains ingredients to strengthen our skin’s barrier function to protect against this transepidermal water loss. The night cream in the Hydra-Essentiel range contains squalene to strengthen the skin’s barrier and also line filling pearls to plump out the lines on the skin for a plumper, smoother skin on awakening.

Dry skin is the same as dehydrated skin.

This is a popular myth, that I’m happy to bust. Dry skin is a lack of oil and dehydration is lack of water, it’s important not to confuse the two. Dry skin is a skin type and dehydrated skin is a skin condition. When the seasons change our skin can experience thermic shocks as it has to adjust to different temperatures which dehydrate the skin.  The patented Leaf of Life in the Hydra-Essentiel range stimulates the synthesis of hyaluronic acid from within re-educating the skin and making the skin self-sufficient.  There are textures to suit all skin types ranging from the Matte Gel for combination skin, Silky Emulsion for all skin types up to the Rich Cream for very dry skin.

You don’t need moisturiser if your skin is oily.

No, your skin will still need a water based moisturiser to keep it hydrated and supple.  The Matte Gel from the Hydra-Essentiel range will keep the skin hydrated but it also contains organic alpine willowherb extract to mattify the skin.

You only need anti-ageing products if you’re older.

No, prevention is better than cure with ageing however one of the important factors to slow down ageing tendencies is to keep the skin hydrated. When the skin dries out prematurely it ages prematurely. The Hydra-Essentiel serum is a bi-phase serum that is suitable for all ages and stimulates the skin’s self-hydration powers by boosting hyaluronic acid production in all of the skins layers.

Bonus myth: Natural products are better for your skin.

Yes, as they don’t contain harsh chemicals that can cause skin irritation.  They are also more sustainable as they don’t contain synthetic ingredients that can pollute the environment, so it’s a win win. The Leaf of Life in the Clarins Hydra Essentiel range comes from a fair trade programme in Madagascar and it is combined with a duo of hyaluronic acids to give the skin a triple boost of hydration.
