Around 10,000 without power as 'significant progress' made restoring supply after Storm Amy

Crews are continuing to work to restore supply to those affected.

LAST UPDATE | 5 Oct

THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE are still without electricity as the clean up continues in the aftermath of Storm Amy.

The storm caused damage to electricity supply, some localised flooding and downed trees after it hit the country on Friday, while one man was killed in Donegal

The National Directorate for Fire and Emergency Management (NDFEM) said “significant progress” has been made across all counties that were impacted by the storm.

The group said the majority of people have seen their electricity and water restored, adding that ESB Networks and Uisce Éireann will continue to deploy crews to the areas that remain affected.

“Every effort is being made to fully restore all affected areas in the shortest possible timeframe,” a spokesperson said.

They said the road network is fully open and all public transport is operating to normal schedules.

“The local coordination of the response will continue until all those impacted have their services fully restored.”

The ESB said that as of 12pm, there were around 10,000 homes, farms and businesses without power.

Crews worked throughout the day yesterday to restore supply to people around the country, with work set to continue today.

A spokesperson for the ESB said that those who did not have their supply restored yesterday would see their power return by tonight. But they said it could be early next week until some customers in the worst affected areas have power restored.

“This is likely to include some customers in Donegal, which saw the highest wind speeds recorded during Storm Amy, and in areas across the northwest,” they added.

Estimated restoration times can be found on their PowerCheck service.

The ESB has warned that anyone who comes across fallen wires or damage to electricity networks should never touch or approach them and should, instead, report any damage to them by calling 1800 372 999.

Donegal County Council opened a number of community-based emergency hubs across the county yesterday to address the needs of vulnerable people who had no electricity or water after Storm Amy.

The NDFEM said Donegal was the worst-affected county by the storm, and the eight centres remain in operation today and are available to provide basic essential services to the communities that remain affected.

The locations of the eight centres can be found here

In Northern Ireland, there are 3,000 properties still without power this morning. Crews from NIE Networks have said the “vast majority” of properties without power in the North will have it restored today.

Met Éireann said it will be mostly cloudy and dry today with some well scattered light showers and moderate winds, with highest temperatures of 12 to 15 degrees. It will remain mostly cloudy with light rain and drizzle in the north and northwest tonight.

Tomorrow will see a cloudy start over the northern half of the country with lingering patchy light rain, but it will become brighter and drier through the morning and will be mostly dry elsewhere with variable cloud and sunshine with highs of 15 to 18 degrees.
