New information booklet launched to help those bereaved through suicide
The booklet, ‘Lighting the way’, contains a listing of national supports such as websites, helpline contact details along with other supports offered locally.

A NEW INFORMATION booklet specifically to help the families and friends of people bereaved through suicide has been launched.

The booklet, ‘Lighting the way‘, was launched in Cork city by the Minister of State at the Department of Health with responsibility for Mental Health, Kathleen Lynch, who said that “user-friendly resource pack” was an excellent model of “partnership in action”.

Numerous organisations were involved in its creation, including HSE North Lee Community Work Department, HSE Health Action Zone (HAZ), An Garda Síochána, Travellers Health Minds Project, Mayfield Action On Suicide (MAOS) and Shine A Light Suicide Awareness Group.

Stephen Murphy, who is a HSE community health worker in Cork city, said that the information pack would be used “as a response support that Gardaí or health professionals can leave with a family / individual after a suicide.”

The pack also contains a listing of national supports such as websites, helpline contact details along with other supports offered locally such as trainings around suicide awareness and bereavement support groups.

It is now available for download from the HSE website.
