EMERGENCY SERVICES ARE telling people in coastal areas of Sussex in England to keep their windows and doors closed amid reports of an “unknown haze” causing irritation to people’s eyes and throats.
The first report came into Sussex Police at 5pm this evening from Birling Gap, where up to 50 people say they were affected by irritation to these areas.
The source of this haze has not yet been established but police believe it is coming from the sea.
As well as staying indoors, police are also telling people to stay away from beaches.
Sussex Police said in a statement: “Emergency services are treating people at Birling Gap and clearing the area. People living along the coast in the area have been advised to keep doors and windows shut and to move away from the Birling Gap area in particular.”
The situation in Birling Gap was described as an “environmental incident” by East Sussex Fire and Rescue officer Dawn Whittaker on Twitter.
Others on social media have suggested that the mist smelled of chlorine, and plastic.
