1. #JOBSWATCH Irish water is to create 1,600 jobs as part of its nationwide metering programme. The company which is to oversee new water charges says that the first of the positions will come on stream within the next few weeks and will run until September 2016.

2. #TRAIN CRASH Spanish police have arrested the the driver of a fast-moving train that flew off the tracks in Santiago de Compostela in Galicia killing at least 80 people and injuring 130. The Spanish Government has also announced three days of official mourning following the crash.

3. #SEANAD Sinn Féin will campaign for the abolition of the Seanad in the upcoming referendum. Finance spokesperson Pearse Doherty described the upper house as “elite and out of touch” and says the party will be seeking a Yes vote in the 4 October ballot.

4. #ARREST Gardaí have arrested a man in his early 40s as part of their investigation into the killing of Dean Fitzpatrick in May of this year. This is the second arrest in relation to the case with the partner of Dean’s mother – 42-year-old Dave Mahon earlier held by Gardaí.

5. # ARIEL CASTRO A US man who kidnapped three women and held them as sex slaves for a decade pleaded guilty to his crimes today and accepted a prison term of more than 1,000 years on top of the life sentence.
