The 9 at 9 Celebrations all round for McIlroy after Masters win, Hungarian protests and tariffs latest.

LAST UPDATE | 14 Apr

GOOD MORNING.

Here’s all the news you need to know as you start the day.

Rory’s glory

1. Rory McIlroy ended is major drought in barely-believable fashion by beating Justin Rose in a play-off to win the 89th Masters and complete the career grand slam.

On his 11th attempt to join golf’s most exclusive club, McIlroy almost threw away a five-shot lead before claiming a coveted green jacket at the Augusta National.

The Co Down golfer is the first player in a quarter of a century to complete the career grand slam and match the feats of legendary names like Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus.

Local celebrations

2. There were tears and cheers aplenty at Rory McIlroy’s home club in Holywood where they celebrated his dramatic win.

Club stalwarts embraced while junior members who dream of emulating their hometown champion chanted his name.

EU meeting

3. Tánaiste Simon Harris is set to attend a high-level meeting with a number of European foreign ministers this morning, where ongoing conflict in both Ukraine and Gaza will be addressed.

The meeting comes on the foot of a Russian attack on the Ukrainian city of Sumy, in which 34 people were killed, and an Israeli bombing of a key hospital in Gaza.

Killybegs death

4. A man dead in his home in Co Donegal yesterday has been named locally as Eddie Friel.

His body was found at the quiet Harbour View Drive estate yesterday afternoon in the fishing town of Killybegs.

The incident has left Killybegs residents shocked, with local Garda sources suggesting the man may have died as the result of a violent incident.

Xi kicks off tariff tour

5. China president XI Jinping has warned that protectionism “leads nowhere” and that a trade war would have “no winners”, as he arrived in Vietnam today on the first leg of a Southeast Asia tour.

Beijing is trying to present itself as a stable alternative to an erratic Trump, whose on again and off again tariffs have sent global markets into a tailspin.

Hungary protests

6. Our News Correspondent Niall O’Connor reports from Budapest, the Hungarian capital that has been gripped by large scale anti-government demonstrations.

One of the main people involved in the protests has warned that there is a real and immediate need to fight against Viktor Orbán-style politics across Europe.

Garda unhappiness

7. A group representing middle management in An Garda Síochána has said the new Minister for Justice Jim O’Callaghan is not listening to warnings over new management systems from garda representatives.

Burglaries

8. Staying with gardaí, their latest figures show that approximately 17 home burglaries took place per day in Ireland over the winter period.

However, that’s a 75% drop on the same period a decade earlier.

Moped crash

9. Two teenagers were hospitalised after the moped they were travelling on was involved in a collision with a car on Sean McDermott Street in Dublin 1.
