1. #ROSTREVOR: A garda investigation into allegations made about conditions at the Rostrevor nursing home in Dublin has not found any evidence of “serious” assault, according to the Sunday Business Post (print edition). Meanwhile, the Irish Mail on Sunday (print edition) reports that sex attacks carried out on an elderly woman at the home in 2005 were covered up.
2. #CYBER ATTACK: The IMF is investigating a serious attack on its computer systems. Staff were informed of the incident earlier this week, although the organisation hasn’t revealed if any sensitive data was accessed. The New York Times reports that, although believed to be a major breach, the extent of the attack is not yet known.
3. #SYRIA: Syrian government forces are pushing into the key northern border town of Jisr al-Shughour. The BBC reports that two refugee camps in Turkey are already full of thousands of people fleeing the Syrian unrest and a third is quickly filling.
4.#CAPS: Ministers are pushing to introduce pay caps for senior civil servants, according to the Sunday Business Post (print edition). Under the cabinet’s plan, the salary of the heads of semi-state companies would be capped at €250,000 and senior public servants face cuts of up to 12 per cent.
5. #TURKEY: The polls have opened across Turkey today as voting for the country’s next parliament gets underway. Al Jazeera reports that over 50 million people are eligible to vote in Turkey. Current prime minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan is seeking a third term.
6. #PAKISTAN: At least 34 people have been killed in a double bomb attack on a market in Pakistan which coincided with a visit from the head of the CIA. Dawn reports that the Taliban has denied responsibility for the attacks. The CIA leader was in Pakistan for talks with senior Pakistani officials about the scope of US intelligence operations in Pakistan.
7. #MURDER: According to a report in the Sunday Independent, gun and bomb attacks are being seen in Ireland as a way to repay drug debts.
8. #US: Four people were injured yesterday when a banana dessert caught fire at a restaurant in Florida, msnbc and the AP report. Two of the four were treated for burns, while the other two refused treatment.
9. #RECORD: A Filipino blacksmith’s son has been named the world’s shortest man by the Guinness Book of World Records. Junrey Balawing, who is 18 today, is 23.5 inches tall:
