GOOD MORNING

The 9 at 9 Nine things you need to know by 9am: Good news at last for struggling mortgage holders; and the Dalai Lama warms up the crowd ahead of Obama’s free speech to Ireland.

Every morning, TheJournal.ie brings you nine things you really need to know with caffeine hit.

1.#FORGIVEN: There’s a ray of hope for struggling homeowners this morning as AIB announces it may begin writing off debt on troubled mortgages.

2. #DONALDSON: A second man is now being questioned in connection with the murder of Denis Donaldson. A 70 year old man was arrested last night.

3. #ROBBERY: A male in his 30s will appear in court this morning charged in connection with yesterday’s bungled post office robbery – after he was arrested in the taxi he tried to use as a getaway car.

4. #COURTS: The High Court is due to rule on Friday on the case of a four year old boy with Down Syndrome, whose parents are objecting to the continuing of his treatment for leukaemial. The court heard that there was not a philosophical objection, but a scientific problem with treatment.

5. #FREE SPEECH: Good news: the public won’t be charged to see Obama speak at Croke Park, it’s reported today.

6. #1974: A group representing the survivors of the 1974 bombings in Dublin and Monaghan has said the British files on the bombings should be made available ahead of Queen Elizabeth’s visit. Justice for the Forgotten says British authorities did not co-operate with the Barron inquiry into the bombings.

7. #PORNOGRAPHY: A 52-year-old man, Thomas McNally, who runs a mass card business in Longford, has gone on trial charged with possession of child pornography. The images were found strewn around a field outside the town after a safe was allegedly stolen from his home, the court heard yesterday.

8. #CRAIGSLIST KILLER: Some of the ten sets of remains  discovered at a Long Island beach may not be connected to the Craigslist killer. Police believe some may be the bodies of the long-lost victims of Joel Rifkin, who confessed in 1993 to killing 17 prostitutes, three of whom were never found. Ten decomposed bodies have all been found in the same area – including those of a baby.

9. #DALAI LAMA: The spiritual leader of Tibet, the Dalai Lama, is on his first visit to Ireland in 20 years – he’s going to speak at events in Dublin, Kildare and Limerick, which will be streamed live on the web.
