The Winners:

• Clare Daly – the Socialist Party candidate has been elected in Dublin North.
• Brendan Howlin – who was elected for Labour in Wexford on the fourth count.
• Michael Creed – the Fine Gael candidate in Cork North West, who was elected this evening after reaching the quota.
• Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin – the Sinn Féin candidate was elected in the first count in Cavan-Monaghan.
• Sean Barrett – the Fine Gael candidate was elected in Dún Laoghaire.
• Paschal Donohoe – the Fine Gael candidate, elected in Dublin Central after initially missing the quota by just 20 votes in the first count.
• Eamonn Maloney – the Labour candidate was elected to Dublin South West, taking the final seat after eight counts.
• Fine Gael - which has received 36.2 per cent of votes nationally in the first counts at 40 out of the 43 constituencies and looks set to take all four seats in Enda Kenny’s constituency.

The Losers:

• Dylan Haskins – who was eliminated from the Dublin South East count.
• Mary Coughlan – who is danger of losing her seat to Thomas Pringle in Donegal South West, but remains optimistic about retaining that seat. “It’s been a very difficult day for all of my colleagues, many of whom have lost their seats and I wish them well and I also wish those who have been elected on this occasion well,” she said.
• Brian Cowen and John Gormley – whose parties are being trashed in the polls. The former coalition partners commiserated this evening before congratulating Fine Gael and Labour on their success so far. Both politicians said their parties would pick themselves up from such an “exceptional day” and move forward.
• Dún Laoghaire voters – who will have to wait that bit longer to find out who takes the fourth seat in their constituency after Labour calls a recount. Labour’s Ivana Bacik and Richard Boyd-Barrett for People Before Profit are battling it out for the final seat.
