THE NIGHT OF is the latest HBO show to get a cult following across the water. And if you’re into dark, mysterious crime thrillers where you don’t know who to root for – The Night Of is for you.

Based on the British show from 2008, Criminal Justice, The Night Of is an eight-part series telling the story of Naz Khan. After bringing a woman home for the night, he wakes up to find her stabbed to death in the bed beside him – but has no memory of anything happening.

What makes this crime drama different from other procedurals is the overarching theme of the randomness of justice – and what that looks like for non-white Americans in a post-9/11 world. Much like the podcast Serial, you won’t be able to guess whether Naz is innocent or not as evidence mounts up against him.

Here’s what the critics and the ordinary folk are saying about The Night Of. It’s got a 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and an 8.9 on Metacritic. Here’s a review from one viewer:

As complicated and layered as life itself, The Night Of is an instant classic.

Hitfix, in a rave review of the first episode The Beach,  says that “The Night Of is the great drama HBO very badly needs right now” and adds:

Despite the high stakes for Naz and his family, The Night Of is also bracingly funny at times, with a sense of gallows humour — not just about (Detective) Stone’s quixotic search for a treatment that will allow him to wear wingtips into court rather than open-toed sandals, but about the peculiarities of the criminal justice system and how it functions in New York City…

To find out what happens to Naz, you’ll just have to watch…
