THE SIMPSONS ARE returning to the big screen after 20 years. 

Disney’s 20th Century Studios have confirmed that a sequel to The Simpsons Movie, which was released in 2007, is officially in the works. 

While no details about the plot of the new film have been released just yet, a teaser shared yesterday revealed that Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and Maggie – along with the other residents of Springfield – will be in cinemas on 23 July 2027. 

The announcement featured a poster depicting Homer reaching for a pink donut (famously his favourite treat) decorated with ’2′ sprinkles with the tagline ‘Homer’s coming back for seconds’.

The Simpsons is the longest-running US animated series on television. Created by Matt Groening, the yellow cartoon family first appeared in a recurring short on The Tracey Ullman Show before getting their own show in December 1989. 

The series was recently renewed for a 40th season, which will air in 2028 and 2029. 

A sequel to The Simpsons Movie has been contemplated for years, but never materialised until now. The plot of the film saw Springfield placed under a giant glass dome after Homer polluted the town’s lake, with the head of the Simpson family needing to save the day.

It made $536 million (€456 million) at the box office.
