LETTERKENNY IN DONEGAL has been named Ireland’s tidiest town.
The town beat off competition from Westport in Mayo, Conegal in Carlow and Listowel in Kerry to claim the overall prize, having been named Tidiest Large Urban Centre at the awards in The Helix today.
Clonegal claimed the award of Ireland’s Tidiest Village, Listowel received the award for Ireland’s Tidiest Small Town and Westport received the award of Ireland’s Tidiest Large Town.
Environment Minister Alan Kelly was on hand to present the award and paid tribute to Letterkenny’s community.
“This is a fantastic achievement for Letterkenny; a really worthy winner. This is the 8th time a town in Donegal has won the overall prize, but the first time for Letterkenny.
Letterkenny have entered the competition every year since 1959 and their win today is testament to them consistently achieving high standards in the competition at local and regional level.
The competition, which is organised by the Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government and sponsored by SuperValu, attracted 862 entries this year.
