THIRTY SIX PEOPLE have been killed and dozens more injured after a train crash early this morning in the Indonesian province of Central Java.
The train was lying idle in the train station in the northern coastal city of Petarukan at around 3am this morning when a train from Jakarta crashed into it.
Most passengers were asleep on board at the time and investigators are now trying to determine the cause. “We’re checking to see if the signals of the parked train were working properly” Transportation Ministry spokesman Bambang Ervan told the Wall Street Journal. “It may also have been mechanical.”
Several carriages were knocked off the track by the force of the impact. Just an hour later, another train crashed in the nearby town of Solo leaving at least one person dead.
