Exploring Tullamore, Co Offaly. Glenveagh Homes

Families will find lots to love in the thriving market town of Tullamore

Schools, mountain walks and plenty of local history.

OFTEN CALLED THE ‘gateway to the midlands’, Tullamore is a thriving community in the heart of Offaly.

The completion of the Grand Canal in 1803, linking Dublin to the River Shannon, brought massive prosperity to Tullamore. Homes and shops began to spring up on either side of the canal’s banks, turning the area into a bustling market town almost overnight.

Today, Tullamore is still divided in two by those banks. While there have been plenty of modern amenities added since, the town’s history is still one of its most striking features.

Walking around you’ll spot landmarks like St Catherine’s, the Gothic revival church, and the 19th century warehouse that’s home to Tullamore DEW Whiskey. The town is also the perfect base to explore the Slieve Bloom mountains, with the Lough Boora Discovery Park a 25-minute drive away. There are plenty of local routes in the area for walkers, hikers and cyclists too.

Growing families will be tempted by the wide range of schools in and around Tullamore, including Scoil Mhuire Primary School, Charleville National School and Tullamore Educate together.

There’s convenience, too. From the local train station, you can be at Heuston Station in 60 minutes, and travel time by car is just over an hour too, along the M6 motorway.
