Two women dead and two children injured following collision in Cork

The collision occurred this afternoon in Mallow, Co Cork.

TWO PEOPLE HAVE died and two children have been injured following a two vehicle crash in Mallow, Co Cork yesterday afternoon.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses after emergency services attended the scene of the incident which occurred at about 3.45pm yesterday on the N72, Killarney to Mallow Road.

Both drivers, a woman aged in her 60s and another woman aged in her 40s, were pronounced dead at the scene. It is understood that the vehicles were involved in a head-on collision.

Two children are aged eight and five, were injured in the collision. A man and a woman, in the same vehicle as the children, were also injured. All of their injuries are non-life threatening.

The Millstreet-based air ambulance was on standby to support emergency services involved in treating persons injured in the incident.

Traffic diversions were put in place and motorists in the area were asked to follow all directions given by the gardaí. 

The road remained closed for some time as Garda collision scene investigators examine the section of roadway involved to try to determine the exact cause of the two-car collision.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this incident to come forward.

Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in the area between 3pm and 4pm are asked to make this footage available to investigating Gardaí.
