Wind speeds reached hurricane force in Co Galway. Met Éireann

Wind speed records broken as Éowyn sweeps Ireland

Mean wind speeds reached hurricane force in Connemara, Co Galway and are likely to have broken records.

LAST UPDATE | 24 Jan

STORM ÉOWYN HAS brought gusts of up to 183km per hour to Ireland.

Wind speeds recorded this morning are likely to have broken all-time records, Met Éireann has said.

By 5am, maximum gust speeds of 183km per hour were recorded at Mace Head in Carna, in the Connemara area of Co Galway.

That provisionally beats the record gust speed recorded of 182km per hour recorded at Foynes in Co Limerick in 1945.

Mean wind speeds at Mace Head were at hurricane force as of 5am, at 130km per hour, with mean speeds of 94km per hour recorded at Shannon and 85km per hour at Sherkin.

Earlier, a mean wind speed of 135km/hour was recorded at Mace Head, provisionally the strongest mean wind speed ever recorded in Ireland. A record of 131km per hour had previously been recorded in 1945 at Foynes.

A gust speed of 159.8km per hour was recorded at Moneypoint in Co Clare.

The storm is continuing to sweep across the country from the west, with the meteorological service warning that further power outages and structural damage were likely as it reached the midlands and north.
