Woman dies after car goes into canal

The woman was seriously injured when her car left the road and entered a canal. The male driver and an 8-month old boy survived.

A WOMAN HAS died after the car she was travelling in left the road and entered a canal in Co Offaly.

A man, who was driving the car, and an eight-month-old baby survived the incident.

Gardaí at Birr, Co Offaly are investigating the single vehicle fatal road traffic collision, which occurred on the road between Cloghan and Shannonbridge at approximately 1pm today.

The 30 year old female, who was a passenger in the car, was seriously injured when the car she was travelling in left the road and entered the canal at Clononey.

She was taken to Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe but was pronounced dead this evening.

The other occupants were also taken to Hospital in Ballinasloe with minor injuries.

This stretch of road was closed for an examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators but has now reopened following its completion.
