A MAN HAS been rescued off the coast of Cork after abandoning his motor yacht which caught fire this afternoon.
His medical condition is not thought to be serious and he will be transferred to Kinsale by a rigid inflatable boat shortly.
The sole crew member of the ship made the distress call at 2pm from about two miles off the Seven Heads in west Cork. He left his yacht which was on fire and was recovered by a nearby pleasure craft.
The Naval Service vessel, LE Niamh, responded to the emergency call and arrived on scene within 15 minutes. It had been on routine patrol in the area at the time.
Medics have already assessed the crew member and preparations to commence fire-fighting operations.
The Cortmacsherry Lifeboat was launched and arrived at the scene to assist with putting out the blaze.
