Gardaí in fresh appeal for information regarding death of Amy McCarthy

GARDAÍ HAVE ISSUED a fresh appeal for information after the body of a young mother was discovered in Cork City.

The body of Amy McCarthy (22) was discovered when gardaí and emergency services were called to a vacant premises on Sheares Street in Cork city centre yesterday at around 6.50am.

The premises had been used as a squat at different times in the past. No arrests have thus far been made.

A post mortem has now been carried out on the body by assistant state pathologist Dr Margaret Bolster. While a preliminary report has been compiled, details are not being made available by gardaí, citing operational reasons.

Gardaí say they are “investigate all of the circumstances of the death and are again appealing to anyone with information to contact the incident room in the Bridewell Garda Station”.

A spokesperson added that gardaí are “particularly appealing to anyone who can assist in tracing the whereabouts and movements” of Amy from Saturday afternoon to Sunday morning.

Tributes

Friends of Amy have taken to Facebook to pay tribute to her.

“Life can be so cruel heartbreaking rest in peace Amy McCarthy,” one friend wrote.

Another friend said:

Such a shock was only talking to you last week girl look over your little boy and your family at this sad time.

The office of the State Pathologist and local coroner were yesterday notified of Amy’s death and her body has since been removed to University Hospital Cork.

A post-mortem was due to take place on the body today. Gardaí said this morning that there was no update on the investigation.
