The bank guarantee did not happen in a panic, it was a long thought out and developed process. It was done in conjunction with bankers and its main focus was to save Anglo Irish bank from facing reality.

People say that Lenihan was unlucky in policy but all of his approach was to protect a select few at great cost to Ireland. It was not a mistake, it was his intention.

Sorry Fagan, the nation had no debts (comparatively) before Lenihan signed off on the guarantee. It was panic, not any kind of ‘long thought out and developed process’. If it was, that just shows you how ignorant these ministers, and their advisers were.

It was thought out, Lenihan knew the damage that it would do to Ireland. FF decided it was either Ireland or its donors and powerful but failed friends. They willingly sacrificed the economy to protect their buddies.

David, We didn’t get a bailout, we got a loan to pay back debt that was never ours in the first place. Remember it was Mr.Linehan who placed those debts on the Irish people instead of at the door of the banks, developer and politicians where they belong.
While it sad to think of anyone being taken so young, lets not sugarcoat the legacy he has left us and our children with.
Don’t forget either that the loans also pay your glorious leaders extortionate salary etc.

You cannot say that the bailout loans are to pay back the banking debts.

Yes *some* of that money goes towards debt repayment but the vast majority of the bailout money is literally to keep the lights on.
