THE BODY OF an Irish man missing in Canada since last weekend was discovered in Whistler yesterday.
The Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed to TheJournal.ie that David Christian’s remains were found on Tuesday night, Canadian-time.
The department is providing consular assistance.
Christian had been reported missing by friends on Monday evening after he failed to turn up for work. He had last been seen on St Patrick’s Day at a local bar and his phone was last used at about 2.30am, according to local press.
Authorities sent a police dog team to conduct a search in the ski area between the bar and the 27-year-old’s staff quarters. His shoes were found in the area of Horstman Creek, which runs through the Fairmont Chateau Whistler Golf Course, on 20 March.
The search and rescue team then located and recovered his body from the creek on Tuesday/Wednesday. Police said there was no sign of foul play.
“The observations at the scene were consistent with death due to hypothermia,” the RCMP said in a statement. “An autopsy will be conducted in the near future.”
“This was not the outcome we’d hoped for,” added Staff Sergeant Steve LeClair. “Police are saddened by this discovery and extend our sympathies to the friends and family of Mr Christian.”
