Court hears American soldier put gun in mouth of young Afghan girl

Another young boy remembers being woken up to screams that an American had “killed our men”.

In this courtroom sketch, a young boy named Sadiquallah, testifies in the early morning hours of Saturday from Afghanistan.

LITTLE ROBINA TOOK her seat wearing a deep-red head covering and a nervous smile, ready to tell her story. She giggled as any seven-year-old in the spotlight might.

But when the questions began, what she recalled seemed impossibly dark: how she hid behind her father when the gunman came to their village that night, how the stranger fired, and how her father died, cursing in pain and anger.

“I was standing behind my father,” she told the court as she testified by video feed from Afghanistan last night. The interview was shown during a hearing for the soldier accused of killing 16 civilians, including nine children, in Kandahar Province. “He shot my father,” she said simply.

One of the bullets struck her in the leg, but she didn’t realise it immediately, she explained.

Her testimony came on the second overnight session of the preliminary hearing for Staff Sergeant Robert Bales, who prosecutors say slipped away from his base to attack two villages. The slaying drew angry protests and forced the US to temporarily halt combat operations in Afghanistan. The outrage also delayed American investigators who could not reach the crime scenes for three weeks.

Harrowing memories

The stories recounted by the villagers have been harrowing. They described torched bodies, a son finding his wounded father, and boys cowering behind a curtain while others screamed, “We are children! We are children!”

Bales sat quietly throughout, betraying no reaction to what he heard.

Robina’s friend, Zardana, now eight, also testified, but only briefly to describe what the shooter was wearing.

Zardana suffered a gunshot wound to the top of her head, and when she arrived at a nearby military base, the doctors focused on treating the other injured victims first as they reasoned Zardana had no chance of surviving.

After two months at a military hospital in Afghanistan and three more at a Navy hospital in San Diego, she can walk and talk again.

Before she testified, Zardana sat at the witness table sipping from a pink juice box through a pink straw. A loose head covering and a barrette held her dark brown hair out of her face.

Death penalty still possible

Afghanistan Massacre

The hearing at Joint Base Lewis-McChord is meant to help determine whether Bales, 39, will face a court-martial in the deaths. He could face the death penalty if he is convicted.

The Ohio native and father of two from Lake Tapps, Washington, has not entered a plea and was not expected to testify. His lawyers have not discussed the evidence, but say he has post-traumatic stress disorder and suffered a concussive head injury while serving in Iraq.

The Afghan witnesses recounted the villagers who lived in the attacked compounds and listed the names of those killed, to provide a record of the lives lost. The bodies were buried quickly under Islamic custom, and no forensic evidence was available to prove the number of victims.

Sadiquallah, a slight boy of about 13 or 14 (main picture) whose head rose just above his chair at the witness table, described being awakened by a neighbour screaming that an American had “killed our men.”

He said he and another boy, Zardana’s brother, ran to hide in a storage room and ducked behind a curtain. It provided no protection from the bullet that grazed his head and fractured his skull. Sadiquallah said the shooter had a gun and a light, but he could not identify the man.

The other child was hit in the thigh and also survived. That boy, Rafiullah, testified Saturday that an American had attacked them and put a gun in his sister’s mouth.

His father, Samiullah, was away when the shootings occurred, and testified that by the time he returned the next morning, his two wounded children had been driven to a base for treatment. He found his mother among the four corpses at the compound.

“I just saw her, I cried, and I could not look on her face,” he said.

Unbelievable?

Prosecutors said that in between his attacks, Bales woke a fellow soldier, reported what he’d done and said he was headed out to kill more. The soldier testified that he didn’t believe what Bales said, and went back to sleep.

During cross-examination of several witnesses Saturday, Bales’ attorney, John Henry Browne, sought to elicit testimony about whether there might have been more than one shooter.

One Army Criminal Investigations Command special agent testified that several months after the massacre, she took a statement from one woman whose husband was killed. The woman reported that there were two soldiers in her room – one took her husband out of the room and shot him, and the other held her back when she tried to follow.

But other eyewitnesses reported that there was just one shooter, and several soldiers have testified that Bales returned to his base at Camp Belambay, just before dawn, alone and covered in blood.

A video taken from a surveillance blimp also captured a sole figure returning to the base.

  • This is the clearcut result of putting a gun in the had of an immature mind. These kids average the age of 19, most have never traveled outside their own state and I’ve heard that only 20% of new recruits even own a passport. These kids grow up in a world where the media and church teach them that a?rabs are evil and want to kill you and your family.

    These kids spend their spare time before enlisting playing video games where (currently) all the bad guys are a-rabs..

    I’m not condoning his behaviour in any way and I actually agree with the death sentence in certain cases…. But this kid was conditioned to believe that all a-rabs are evil… Combine this with a poor education, high stress and possibly seeing compatriots kill and be killed…..

    Can we be surprised?

      Sean al qaeda & the Taliban are reponsible for 911. One could not exist without other the other & there is a Saudi link as well. If anyone thinks the US is heavy handed you must consider that they reponded to an attack. Anyone that thinks the war in Iraq was unjustified go on line & ask the Kurds. In my view all wars are terrible & crimes are commited on all sides but Iraq has multiparty democracy a free press & a new constitution. Its far from perfect its fragile & yes there is violence but ask the majority of Iraqis do they want the baath party back & its an emphatic no. Also Islam needed to be shown that force will be met with force. Islam is now like christianity its badly wounded & secularists are showning their faces all over the middle east.
      Now what has happened to these people is abhorrent but its being dealth with & rightly so. We can criticise the US all we want here but they are good at justice not like in Europe. How many british soldiers are before the courts for crimes in the north.How many dutch soldiers for the crime in Srebenica. We dont have the high moral ground here.

    • The Taliban (who the US helped when Russia was massacring the Afghan people) is an ally of Al Qaeda. The Taliban helped hide/train Al Qaeda members, not to mention that Al Qaeda members are trained in Afghanistan. The majority of Afghan people are a lot happier with the US in control vs. the Taliban. I know you can never tell this to the far-leftists and people from neighboring Islamic states without getting a backlash. Many Pakistanis will claim otherwise in regards to how the Afghan people feel, that is just part of their anti-American propaganda. Who are they to speak for Afghans? They are one of the main reasons why Afghanistan is being constantly terrorized. The Tribal areas? I am half-Pakistani and my ancestors hail from Afghanistan (Pashtuns); so I don’t need a history lesson from anyone. This was an isolated incident, to demonize the entire US military for the crime of certain individuals is wrong. The reality is the overwhelming majority of deaths is the result of the Taliban and are on purpose. http://markhumphrys.com/pakistan.html – Interesting read.

You and many others fell for a hoax (Loose Change) made by a fame hungry teen and the work of a creationist Mormon scientist who believes the earth is 6000 yrs old. There is a big market in the US among the right wing Christian fundamentalists for conspiracy theories and their associated media, they sit waiting to jump on the band wagon, so be careful who you are getting into bed with. They have the money and they want to prove how evil the world is so it fits in with their Apocalyptic vision of the world. Every one of the theories these crackpots have put forward was blown wide open as has their agenda. I would agree that there are some unanswered questions about 9/11 but that does not make it a government conspiracy and cover up. It is just the same as any incident in life big or small if you look at it too closely it will pose for you more questions, than answers, don’t waste time looking for what is not there.

    • @John Byrne you live in a fantasy world, for a start the pentagon is not even on the top ten of most photographed buildings, its not even the most photographed building in the USA.
      If you did some proper research (as you failed to do on your pentagon statement) you will find that the claim for the presence of super thermite is another fallacy that has been debunked by scientists and building engineers. The theory is pure fiction, it might work in Fantasyland but not in the real world. Can an airplane crashing into one of the twin towers cause it to collapse? yes…

      just think of it like this.. the airplane has…
      kinetic energy = 1/2mv^2
      potential energy = mgh
      and chemical potential energy = mass unburned jet fuel x heat of combustion

      assume m = 255,000 lbs
      v = 450 mph
      g = 9.8 m/s^2
      h = 95 floors ≈1100 ft
      mass fuel = 10,000 gal
      heat of combustion = 43 MJ/kg
      density fuel = 0.8 g/cm^3…

      any way.. you do the math and you come up with about 6×10^9 KJ of energy being suddenly released into each building…

      1 ton of TNT = 4.2×10^6 kJ… so that

      6×10^9 kJ x (1 ton / 4.2×10^6 kJ) x (1 kt / 1 ton) ≈ 1.5 kilotons of TNT. The nuclear bomb that destroyed Hiroshima was 15 kilotons. source http://probelab.geo.umn.edu/analysis.html

      Do you understand? The energy in the airplane was about 1/10 the energy of the bomb that destroyed Hiroshima. Now what makes you think that can’t bring a building down?
      Wake up get a life and stop daydreaming up there on the grassy knoll and spend some of that loose change.
