Clearing the way: Eamon Gilmore has officially resigned as Tánaiste

Joan Burton is set to be formally appointed later today.

EAMON GILMORE HAS resigned as Tánaiste this afternoon paving the way for Joan Burton to be appointed to the role later today.

The Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade has written to the Taoiseach Enda Kenny to formally resign the office of Tánaiste this afternoon.

In his letter, Gilmore said doing so would enable the Taoiseach to nominate his successor at the earliest possible time.

With Burton set to be declared Labour leader this afternoon she will formally be appointed as Tánaiste later today.

In the letter he also thanked the Taoiseach for his courtesy and co-operation, saying it had been a privilege and an honour to work with him in the leadership of Government during “a very difficult time in the country’s history”.

Gilmore’s resignation formally brings to an end his over three years as Tánaiste. He will remain Minister for Foreign Affairs until the Cabinet reshuffle which is expected next week.
