GARDAÍ IN SLIGO have renewed their appeal for witnesses who may be able to help them investigate the death of Eugene Gillespie in the town last week.

The 67-year-old died on Saturday night from injuries sustained during a vicious assault at his home during an aggravated burglary.

Investigating detectives believe the property on Old Market Street was raided some time between 9pm on Wednesday and 9pm Friday last. They have asked for anyone who may have seen anything unusual or suspicious in the area on these days to contact them at the local station on 071 915 7000.

It is understood that the victim was tied to a chair in his house after the brutal attack took place.

A post mortem on his body was carried out at University College Hospital Galway yesterday.

  • The are collecting money as we speak in Sligo for a reward to flush the culpits out, I hope they collect a lot of money because there is no honour between thieves.

  • Not the death penalty. Longer sentences and an end to this ridiculous policy of early release after serving half the sentence would be better. If we didn’t have to throw good money after bad on the bondholders and banks (to say nothing of excessive salaries and pensions) we could afford to keep these violent offenders in prison for at least three quarters of their sentence.

  • We should have a Death Penalty for the animals that take part in this sort of crime. What sort of State cannot protect their elderly?

  • I honestly think that our Gardai should release the audio of the emergency 999 call which was made on Thursday afternoon as I am positive someone will recognize the voice of the caller who may have vital information regarding this murder?

I have some other questions I would love to ask our Gardai?

What time was this emergency 999 call made on Thursday last? As Mr Gillespie was only found on Friday afternoon and he died Saturday evening.

Who released (“sources”) information to Sligo Councilor Declan Bree that “had Mr Gillespie been found on Thursday evening, due to extent of his injuries he would not have survived.”?

I even heard on RTE radio on Monday 24th September that Mr Gillespie, had he survived, would have had his hands “amputated”? Who released this information to the media? State Pathologist? Gardai? Coroner? Doctor?

Could the Gardai have done more?
As it is a very large prominent and visible Brown Gate/Door and the house is only 100 yards from the local station.

Now more importantly, can the Gardai release the audio of this 999 emergency call (which they now claim had significant information), as surely someone will recognise the voice of the person who could have vital information to help solve this murder case?

I was mearly responding to all the back slapping and “great work” the gardai is getting in this tragic case in this thread with “could they have done more”?

As for facts – Eugene Gillespie is dead. He was found dying more than 24 hours AFTER a 999 Emergency call was made which “was quite specific” (Garda spokesman released this information only on Wednesday 27th). Fact

Councillor Declan Bree said on RTE news that “had Mr Gillespie been found on Thursday evening, due to “extent of his injuries he would not have survived”? Fact.

Who gave this information to Cllr Bree? State Patologist?Gardai? Hospital Spokesman? Doctor?

I even heard on RTE radio on Monday 24th September that Mr Gillespie, had he survived, would have had his hands “amputated”? Who released this information to the media?

Could the Gardai have done more? As it is a very prominent Brown Gate/Door which is less than 100 yards from Garda Station.

Maybe had he been found earlier he might have survived?

I didn’t know Mr Gillespie but if I was a friend or a family member I would want to know the answer?
      …………Put yourself in Mr Gillespie’s shoes –

I simply asked – Could the Gardai have done more?

      #Nuffsaid Thatsall

No I have no grudge against the Gardai but I do find it sad that a man has died and the Gardai seem to release information when it suits to garner and sway public opinion in their favor? By the number of thumb downs I have received for expressing my opinion it certainly seems to work for them? But hey …… each to their own. Had I known Eugene I would have wanted to know that every possible action was taken correctly while he was lying dying alone.

Also the man charged a Simon McGinley “presented himself at Sligo Garda Station on Friday night.”

      RIP Eugene Gillespie

  • This sort of crime is the lowest of the low. I am assuming it is ALL about the money. And there is only a few reasons for that it is either greed or drugs. More probably The drugs part. I think it is very sad that there is so little value on life. I think the Celtic tiger is responsible for breading a lot of selfish self centred people
