8-year-old boy found dead in Cork was due back in school today

HSE says it is investigating the contact of health services with Anthony Ward’s family prior to his death.

THE HEALTH SERVICE Executive has released a statement regarding the death of 8-year-old Anthony Ward in Charleville, Co Cork.

The HSE said it was undertaking a “comprehensive review of its involvement” with the family of Diane and Anthony Ward prior to the discovery of Anthony’s body in his home this morning. It added:

HSE South, Console (24hr freephone helpline number 1800 201 890 ) and other agencies will provide appropriate support, assistance and counselling to those affected by the incident.

Anthony Ward was found dead at his home at Harrison Place in Charleville at around 9.30am today. He had been due to start back at his local primary school today.

Gardaí say they are investigating all circumstances surrounding the death, which is being treated as a “tragic incident”. A post-mortem is being carried out on the child’s body after State Pathologist Dr Margaret Bolster arrived at the scene earlier today.

Diane Ward, Anthony’s 43-year-old mother, has been taken to Cork University Hospital for treatment.
