In pictures: President Higgins visits London's Olympic stadium

The president concluded his two-day visit to London on a positive note.

PRESIDENT MICHAEL D Higgins has taken a tour of the Olympic stadium in London today on the second day of his UK trip.

Last night he gave a speech at the London School of Economics and Political Science in which he warned that we are moving towards an intellectual and democratic crisis.

But in his visit to the Stratford site today, Higgins was a bit more cheery and very impressed with what was before him. The London Olympics get under way on 27 July.

His tour guide was the chair of the Games’ organising committee Lord Sebastian Coe. Also in attendance were Higgins’ wife Sabina, Irish Paralympic athlete Michael McKillop and rower Sarah Caffrey:
