THE MAN CHARGED in connection with the stabbing of Irishman Kenny Meyler in the western Australian city of Perth last weekend is also Irish, the Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed this morning.

21-year-old Meyler from Wexford died at the weekend following the attack in which he was stabbed in the neck with a large carving knife at a property in Helmsley Street, Perth.

Yesterday a spokesperson for the department told TheJournal.ie that a number of family members are heading to Perth and the department is offering consular assistance to them.

The department said it would not be releasing any other details about the 32-year-old man charged in connection with the incident. He was remanded to appear again before the court later this month.

    • Our reputation is in good standing order, for it was not We who committee any crime.

    • I think SlapStick has a point here actually. If our reflex reaction to tragedies like this is “Oh dear our reputation!” doesn’t that suggest a chronic sense of insecurity? None of us know the details of this other than that a young man tragically died at the hands of another. It’s something that happens in all countries and is not a blemish on Irish people generally. If Australian people perceive it that way (and I don’t think many will) they’d be pretty narrow minded.

  • In all fairness I don’t think that most people would stab someone in the neck with a carving knife regardless of the quantity of drink they had. That takes a fair capacity for rage that has to be in the person before they ever pick up a glass. Anyway 2 lives ruined. 2 sets of parents grieving. Terrible tragedy.

  • I lived in Australia for 5 years, I’m Irish. Unfortunately because of the behavior of many Irish there, there is a perception that many Irish are ignorant, drunken fools. This perception is not unjustified, some of them are, and it is a shame as they tarnish our reputation. People should remember that they represent their country when they travel and to respect the countries that they visit. It is a pity to ever have to be ashamed of your national identity.

I always respect countries I visit and have never broken the law abroad or got into any strife. That said, I don’t consider myself some kind of ambassador for Ireland. I represent myself and only myself.

    • Id swear some of these posters just comment to spice up their boring lives. Trolls! People shouldnt judge until they have walked in that persons shoes. Whether there was drink involved or not, it was still a crime that never should have happened. And a family are left to grieve and try to understand their loss.
Just another case of stereotyping the Irish. Tell me what nation doesnt drink!!!
I agree Kevin, self involved and egotistical.

    • It is fair comment that we are reading reports of a good number of (mainly) Irish men who have died or assaulted and in what appears to be mainly social situations or where alcohol was consumed. In that respect, Irish people abroad are living up to a certain stereotype or reputation.

Leaving that aside, it’s dreadful to learn of another life lost senselessly and violently.

  • I lived in Australia for almost 4 years never was I accused if being a drunk Paddy. I was treated with the same respect I gave them. Irish are popular over there we are perceived as hardworking with a great sense if humour.
In every country there are people who are bigoted & racist there are also those who are embarrassed about them. Australia is no different.
It is embarrassing when a fellow country man lets the reputation down, they feel the same when an Australian is arrested for murder. They pride themselves on it being a welcoming country and the best place in the world to live.
After what happened to Ms Meagher in Melbourne they will very sorry for the family of the murdered man who suffered this tragic loss so far from home when he should have been having the time of his life.

  • This terrible incident could have taken place in Ireland or anywhere else in the world. Just because it happened between to compatriots on foreign soil it doesn’t mean that we are creating a bad name for ourselves
