I think the choice of Micheál Martin as Party Leader was a mistake. Whatever happened, Fianna Fáil was going to get hit hard but he might have made the hit not quite as grievous and well positioned the party for rebuilding itself in opposition. To do that he needed to adopt a far more republican tone, saying for instance that it would be Fianna Fáil policy to get rid of the Blasphemy Bill and that the country needed to have a serious debate on States’ rights versus European Union rights, as they have in America on States’ rights versus Federal Government rights, as it is now a fiction that countries like Ireland, Britain and Holland are sovereign states in their own right, they are now a part of sovereign state called the European Union.
