Pensioner shot dead in Mayo

A younger man has been arrested after the 71-year-old died from his injuries.

A 71-YEAR-OLD man has been shot dead in rural Mayo this afternoon.

The pensioner was seriously injured in the shooting which happened at Wallpark in the Glencorrib area, near the border with Galway.

He was taken to Galway Regional Hospital after the incident at around 2.15pm, but has since died from his injuries.

A man in his early 30s has been arrested over the incident. He is currently being held at Claremorris garda station under section four of the Criminal Justice Act.

The scene has been sealed off for investigation by garda forensic teams. The State Pathologist has been contacted and is likely to travel to the scene for an examination.
