THE PROGRESS OF the Olympic torch through its Irish leg continues today with the eternal flame passing through Dublin city and its surrounds.
Some – though not all – of the torch’s route has been carried live on RTÉ One this morning. (You can watch all of the route live on the BBC’s website here).
Does having the torch in the country this morning mean something to you? Does it make you feel more cheerful than usual?

I was having a terrible morning stuck in traffic in the city centre on a bus, found myself cursing that torch. I decided to stop being a grump and stopped off at Stephens green and join in. Definitely cheered me up. The pa system broke when Sebastian Coe went to speak but unfortunately was fixed when jedward came on. I hate to knock our own but man they are head wreckers.
Well it was nice to see all the school kids in their uniforms lining the roads waving flags,but yeah it’s a good thing, shame it’s only going to Dublin
didn’t know it was coming, don’t quite know why it did, but it was great to see it, roll on a world where comradery and friendship reign, hope it keeps spreading until “the common sense of most shall hold a fretful realm in awe, and the kindly earth shall slumbe, lapt in universal law”
Great to see two of Ireland’s sporting legends carrying the Olympic torch today… well done Jedward. You make me embarrassed to be Irish!
And well done to the VP of Coke, who’s got no involvement with sport other than watching it every so often.
And congrats to the OCI for not picking people like Philip Murphy (two-time world champion in olympic clay pigeon) to carry the torch, but picking people who don’t take part in the Olympics to carry it because they’re in the GAA, or because they’re hyperactive idiots who make us all look stupid at every turn.
Yay.
Frankly, we’ve just pissed on the torch, so thanks to the OCI for depressing those of us in olympic sports. Even the Irish Sports Council couldn’t have spat any harder on us, and they’ve a lot more practice at it.
I’m delighted for the UK and Ireland to be getting something so nice that a lot of people in the UK have worked incredibly hard for, usually at personal expense and for no pay! Irish people should be grateful to have to do so little to have such a strong ally; don’t forget that Irish people are a huge group in the UK and supporting the UK Olympics is supporting our diaspora overseas!
I am rather jaded about a Summer Olympic session in the UK being in the midst of such terrible austerity on both sides of the Irish Sea,,,, but thems the times and a smile is always free! (though apparently that’s too steep a price for people like ^^@Aranthos Faroth)
It angers me because it reminds me of the corruption in the elite group. Pay Hickey was driven around Greece in a Bentley that he arranged with a pal in return for his pal carrying the torch for a bit of the journey, all at the same time the boxers were training in containers.
It’s very generous of Britain to try to cheer up people over here.
Although I do think Bobby London up there is a bit of a stirrer and not worthy of my time, I do think this is a bit ridiculous. I mean, yesterday we’re up in arms that an automated twitter account accidentally tweeted something British at us, but today we’re mad for their Olympic torch, which has no reason at all to be in Ireland.
Of course it’s nice for people to get to carry it, and to see it I guess, but if we’re going to be touchy about stupid things like Starbucks thinking we’re British shouldn’t we be annoyed about us begging to be let in on their Olympic fun?
To be clear now, I’m not saying we should or shouldn’t be annoyed about any of these things, but is it surprising that some people might think we’re British when we’re doing this?
Don’t mind him Susan. The journal is a great read and poll’s like this allow people to give their input. The Olympic torch should cheer people up, especially the way the country is at the moment. We’ll probably never see it again here in our lifetime.

Has no business being on Irish soil, north or south, when the Olympics are in London.
Maybe in 2056 or something when Ireland’s got its act together so as to be able to hold a major sporting event on its own, and it passes round the country, it’d make me feel happy.
As it stands, it’s just another cultural cringe. Attempting to lap up something the Brits have.
You’re missing the point. Ireland isn’t in France’s sphere of cultural imperialism and French centralism – that unfortunate award goes to the Basques, Bretons, Haitans and so forth.
Ireland is mainly in the Anglo-American sphere of dominance culturally speaking

No, I feel less cheerful.
Maybe it’s the fact that I don’t give a damn, and it’s all over the shop.
Or maybe cos it’s at the same time as the Queen of Englands Jubilee – which I don’t give a damn about.
Or maybe it’s cos it’s around the same time as the fiscal treaty vote – which I don’t give a damn about.
Or maybe cos the nice weather is gone.
Or maybe because we’re now looking at serious austerity.
Or… just maybe… it’s because I’m just not a happy guy.

It’s nice to know that whether Irish or British, one thing seems to unite; the belief that Jedward are largely to all intent and purposes, pointless; an answer to a question that no one asked. Unfortunately, to make matters worse, the question was duly answered…..twice.
It makes us all feel so British and United. Good Luck to Great Britain & Ireland at the Olympics London 2012.
