Roll-your-own tobacco imported from China seized in north Dublin

The tobacco was being packaged in well-known roll-your-own branding in what Revenue has described as a ‘cottage industry’.

REVENUE’S CUSTOMS SERVICE has seized nearly €65,000 worth of roll-your-own tobacco from a premises in north Dublin.

The 165 kilogrammes of tobacco, with an estimated street value of €64,242 and a potential loss to the Exchequer of €53,154, was seized yesterday while it was in the process of being repackaged into counterfeit 50 gramme pouches with well known roll-your-own branding.

The brands included Amber Leaf, Golden Virginia and Samson. Revenue described this as a ‘cottage industry’ type operation without any quality assurance processes.

The tobacco, it said, was imported from China.

In a follow up operation two vehicles were seized and Customs officials have also questioned four individuals in relation to the seizure.

Revenue has also urged any members of the public or businesses who have information about the smuggling or sale of cigarettes to contact them on the free phone number 1800 295 295.
